I've been out of the loop for so long when it comes to reading fiction that I don't know what's out there. I know that R. Scott Bakker released a new book, but that's it.

Not new, but there you go. Phillip Pullman. Trilogy. Ignore the movie.
I also read "The End of Mr Y" recently by Scarlett Thomas, which is supposed to be terrific but I found it incredibly restricted. The main character wasn't very likable and it's shrouded in religious metaphor. It just wasn't very subtle, but the first 100 or so pages are very very good. It might be worth reading just for those.

I'm not too keen on The Golden Compass. I might check out The End of Mr. Y, however

You should try the "Crusader"-series by Robyn Young or the "Conquerer"-series by Igulden. They are respectively about the Crusades and the Mongol empire. I am really into historical novels at the moment and I think you might enjoy them to.
