Pern, a world where so much or so little can be happening depending on the Turn. Most of us are acquainted with the most climactic times in the history of Pern. This story however, begins at a much calmer, peaceful time for the dragons, their riders and the rest of Pern. The citizens of Pern were at such ease with the worry free environment they lived in that both Holder and Dragonrider grew complacent and languid in it. Two hundred Turns without worry of the deadly Threads that fell from the sky, the people on Pern rumored that Thread was no longer a threat until it became commonplace to hear people speaking of thread as a myth and legend that had been defeated and would never return. Even the Dragonriders began to believe as the Holders did, until no one believed Thread was ever coming back.
The Weyrs grew smaller, some not even boasting 150 dragons. Igen, the smallest in number had an elderly Queen, almost 59 Turns of age, who had laid only one other Gold. This one was very young, maybe 4 at most in age. The people across Pern would never have been able to handle the old menace that fell from the skies. So comfortable in their ignorance they were that when Thread did fall they were caught completely off-guard. The Sixth Pass began as Thread faced a bunch of unpolished riders and dragons. The death toll was astronomical. Igen took the largest hit. The vegetation around the Holds caused a much bigger problem than anyone could have forseen. Igen lost both Queens and because of this, new leadership had to be provided. The Weyrs agreed that Igen riders were to be dispersed to different Weyrs. Fort and Ista were going to keep close watch as Igen Weyr was rebuilt. The riders stationed their by the Weyrleaders of Pern would fly with Fort and Ista against Thread until their numbers improved.
Who would they send? How could they make it fair? A Queenrider from one Weyr was certain to favor her home Weyr in any meeting. Distrust began to form between the Weyrs. Fort, however made a most valid point. They needed someone who was not already leader of her own Weyr but neither did they want some young woman who had no real idea of what responsibility to the Weyr was. Better to send an experienced Queenrider than some younger Gold. The Weyrs came up with only two Goldriders that fit these qualifications. Quinn of Fort Weyr and Suvria of Benden Weyr. The Fort Weyrleader made yet one other point. They needed a woman who was not attached to one particular Bronzerider. The Bronzerider would not be permitted to join and the Goldrider would consequently be sad. None could argue with that, not even Benden.
Junior Weyrwoman Quinn of Fort Weyr was sent for and immediately told of the plans for Igen. As any intelligent person would, she chose to go to Igen. Senior Weyrwoman would be a step up from groveling under some ancient crone who wouldn’t die.
Those selected to go to Igen were not sent away without due consideration. They had earned the trip to the new Weyr for various reasons, some of which were not entirely good. The fifty were from all the Weyrs, not just Fort and it would be these brave men and women who would come to save all of Pern.
Join Igen Weyr and realize your destiny.
