The Trojan War
Episode 1: Calm sea
[PROLOGUE:This story is a fragment off the tale off Trojan wars. It plays around 1000 b.c. It is my vision from what happened, so on some places I modified the story a bit. To make the story a little bit clearer: Mycene was how Greece was called in that time. Greece was ruled by separate city-states, each city controlled a small area, so you can’t speak off a real nation or country. However the Mycene city’s often supported eachother in war. Famous city-states are: Athene, Sparta and Korinthe.]
As predicted, the sea was calm. The night before an ox was offered in honor of the sea-god Poseidon and it was nice to see that he was pleased. Low waves rocked against the hull off the ship and the wind saw to it that the fleet made good progress. A few weeks earlier numerous ships left the ports of the Mycene cities. Aganemnon, the captain of the fleet himself, set sail just 9 days ago. The ships came together near Athene on the coasts off the Island off Attica yesterday and formed the biggest fleet the world had ever seen. Thousands off ships and countless Greek men now stood under Aganemnon’s command. He found great relief in the fact that when the first Greek soldier set foot upon Trojan territory, the command would pass to Achilles. Not that Aganemnon was afraid to command an army as big as he commanded now. No, not Aganemnon the great Spartan general who had fought and won battles time after time. But still… After all, it was Troy. Troy with his inpenetrable walls and massive armies. Troy which enemys had never set foot in the city. Aganemnon was not afraid, he was just cautius. And as his father used to tell him:” A warned man counts for 2”. No, this was no job for him. Let the Gods( or in Achilles case, half-gods) deal with this. But offcourse that was not what happened.
Priulo pulled the nets in. It was not a great catch, but that did’nt matter. The Fish price was high these days. Especially since the rumor reached the city that the Mycene armies where going to get Helen back. Oh lovely Helen, gift off the gods, allmost matching the beauty off Aphrodite herself. With her hair, golden as the sun, and her eyes, deep as… Piulo came to himself just in time to see the lasts maces off the net go down the rail and into the deep blue sea. Damn, a commoner as he with a Princess such as Helen off Athene? What was he thinking? Priulo looked up and saw a long dark smear across the Horizon,”probably clouds” he thought.”better row back to shore fast”. But the thought vanished as quicly as it came. Instead off going back to shore he kept daydreaming… Besides, Helen belongs too Paris, our prince, to him and to noone else. Atleast that was the way Priulo tought about it. He knew the rumors that the greek wanted to come get her back. They claimed that Helen still belonged in Athene, but how could that be true? It was Known that Paris held a beauty contest for the godesses Aphrodite, Hera and ‘’’’. The story went as this: Paris got bored off all his princelike duties and held a beauty-contest among 3 goddesses. These where Hera, ‘’’’’, and offcourse Aphrodite. The winner would be pronounced by Paris giving her a golden apple. Aphrodite promised Paris, that if he gave her the apple, she would give him the most beautifull women in all the world. Paris hesitated, but eventually gave Aphrodite the apple. She was true to her word and gave Paris Helen, princess off Athene. Offcourse, that was not how the Greeks thought about it…
Achilles stood next to Aganemnon on the deck of his ship. Behind their ship came row upon row off war-galleys filled with Mycene soldiers, ready to battle for their leader. He felt confident. He had never lost a battle in his whole life, and never got wounded either. Aganemnon, who stood to his left, didn’t look that happy. He stood twitching his thumb and was staring towards the east. “Can’t wait to get you hands on those Trojans, isn’t it my friend?” Aganemnon turned his head towards Achilles.he said ”No, can’t wait”. But his eyes said”yes it can wait, in fact, lets turn around now and go home, before its to late”. Achilles did not understand. Sureley, there has never been such great an army, then the army they where commanding now. But Aganemnon’s solemn mood didn’t pull Achilles good humour down. He slapped his friend on the back and comforted him” I have never been defeated before, remember? I’m the son off gods. Greatest among great. King off kings, mightiest off all rulers”. “Sure you are” said Aganemnon. “If your so great, then use you goddly powers and make me some roasted-pork”. Playfully Achilles hit him on the shoulder. That was the way he knew Aganemnon. He was one of the few persons who didn’t call him “Sir”(well he used it sometimes, mockingly). They both burst out in laughter.Aganemnon’s laughing sounded real, but tens. Hearing the strain in his friends voice, Achilles turned to look up to him. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. Behind his friends head he saw a boat. It was a simple fishermans boat, but nonetheless off great importance. The ship wore white and blue painted carvings on the side marking it Trojan. The boat fastly row eastward towards a brown line at the horizon. He was still figuring out what it could be when a cry came from above the mast.”Land Ahead!”.
Aganemnon looked up and saw what the man was shouting about. In the distance the mountains of Troy marked his sight. Immediately he gave the order to lower the ankers.
And thus the great ships off the Mycene cities, full off Greek soldiers lay in front off Anatolie=modern-day Turkey= 40 miles from where the great walls of Troy, ringed an even greater city. And right at that moment Helen turned from the window from where she had be looking westwards and said to her beloved Paris” It has begun” and kissed him fiercely.
