I remember reading somewhere about a prophecy of Mat saying that he had to lose half the light of the world to save the world. What's that about?

I remember reading that too. What it means, I don't know. **waits for the all-knowing Temanin to reply**

Likely it would mean for him, Rand, and the forces of Good to triumph they would have to lose their purity. Perhaps they make an alliance with the evil Sharans, allow their slave economy to continue. Perhaps they turn corrupt themselves. Most inherently benevolent empires crumble because of corruption by the members inside.
LOL, of course, I just stated the obivous there.
The prophecy means just what it ways: for him to save the world he will have to destory, or lose half the good in the world, the world as a whole or the world from his point of view. He might even have to kill the girl he loves best to save it.
Or perhaps he has to turn to evil metods to defeat them. Destructive terrifying tactics matched only by the Shadow to defeat the Shadow.

Or he has to lose an eye.

While I like Bob's post there better, knowing Jordan's style I'm guessing it's the poking out the eye. But it would be better if Bob was correct. Two thumbs up. ^^
And I appreciate that you believe me to be all-knowing, but sadly I am not. I actually know very little.

Already read it. Why do you think I supposedly know it all? Back in the day when I did absolutely nothing but read and get on the computer, that's the stuff I did.
I have read, over a span of a couple months, almost if not all of that stuff.

I have read many of the topics, but not all.

If the Wheel of Time were a science fiction novel, I'd suggest that it means destroying the moon - although scientifically, the moon reflects light from the sun, it could be seen as a source of light during night. And although night doesn't take up exactly half of a day, destroying the moon could be seen as giving up half the light of the world.
I know it's not true, but I thought it worth mentioning.

Or.... someone shoots an enormous EMP-charge so that half the world is without electricity and thus, without light.
I know it's not true, but I thought it worth mentioning.

But the WoT is fantasy, not science fiction. Either idea by Vic or Silvion is a good idea for a scifi novel.

Or what could happen would be someone weaves a sort of barrier in the air, so that half the world is consitently blocked from the sun...
I know it's not true, but I thought it worth mentioning.

And what about this: A volcanoe erupts with a giant bang. Tons of ash drifts up into the stratosphere, covering half the world. Sunlight is not strong enough to break the barrier and WHAM! there you go! half the light of the world is lost!
I know it's not true, but I thought it worth mentioning.

Or someone invents nano machines that fly, and they blacken half the world's skys, and thus half the world's light is lost.
I know it's not true, but I thought it worth mentioning.
