Wootz, also known as Damascus Steel, is an extremely hard and tough metal that was created in India. It is known to be trough and able to keep its edge for a long time. My thoughts are that Robert Jordan used wootz for his Power-forged steel that make up Heron-Marked Blades. They were both very well known as prized blades and the method on forging them have been lost. This seems likely and the only real way to find out would be to ask Robert Jordan. The next time he will take questions I will ask him. On a related note, I also believe that George R.R. Martin used wootz as the basis for his Valyrian steel.

Seems the "Wootz" would account for many Great weapons, not only in books but in common lore and myth.
I'm not sure if any writer, or if they did then very few, have ever given a large amount of time and though on there weapons, at-least what they are made of. I personally do, but I'm no writer.
I want to say there was a way of make-ing weapons 10 times stronger that required obsidian, I want to say you layer the folds with it, and compress it.
There was a book, I want to say it was called Sword Born, I think. Well I want to say that was on of the books in the series. Anyway, my dad used to read it, and the main character was a black smith, and he quenched the swords in people or something like that, and it gave the swords the 'personality' if you will, of the person.
If anyone knows what it is called let me know I would like to read it.
